:: Who should not take Wellbutrin (Bupropion)?

You should not take Wellbutrin (Bupropion) if you:

- Have or have had a seizure disorder (epilepsy).
- Are already taking Zyban, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, or any other medicines
  that contain bupropion hydrochloride
- Have or have had an eating disorder (bulimia or anorexia nervosa).
- Are abruptly discontinuing use of alcohol or sedatives (including benzodiazepines).

It is important to let your doctor know about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are taking, and if you have or have had other medical conditions especially head injury, brain tumor, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver problems, kidney problems, diabetes and alcohol or drug dependence.

There is no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to bupropion. But there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Wellbutrin (Bupropion) should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Bupropion is secreted in human milk, which can lead to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants. Nursing mothers must either stop nursing or discontinue Wellbutrin (Bupropion). Women should notify their doctor if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant while taking Wellbutrin (Bupropion).

When used with a nicotine patch or alone, there is a risk of increased blood pressure, sometimes severe. Let your doctor know if you have hypertension (high blood pressure).

Wellbutrin (Bupropion) should be used with extreme caution in patients with severe liver disease. If you have liver or kidney problems, tell your doctor before taking Wellbutrin (Bupropion). Depending on the severity of your condition, your doctor may need to adjust your dosage.

Only your healthcare provider can tell you for sure if you should or not take Wellbutrin (Bupropion). Inform your healthcare provider, during either a physical or online consultation, about all the medicines you are taking, prescription or over-the-counter, and about any medical conditions you have or have had, including allergies.

:: How does Wellbutrin (Bupropion) work?

Depression is believed to be caused by an imbalance of the brain’s neurotransmitters, the chemicals that allow nerve cells to communicate. Bupropion is a weak inhibitor of the reuptake of the neurotransmitters, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine, leading to increased levels of these chemicals.

Although it not known exactly how Wellbutrin (Bupropion) works to help patients with major depressive disorder, it is believed that its antidepressive action is a result of its action on these neurotransmitters.

:: How well does Wellbutrin (Bupropion) work?

Three clinical studies have shown that bupropion is an effective treatment for major depressive disorder. In all three studies, patients receiving bupropion showed improvement of the Depressive Rating Scales used to measure depression symptoms compared to sugar pill.

A fourth study showed that patients who had responded to 8 weeks of bupropion therapy who continued taking bupropion had significantly lower depression relapse rates over 44 weeks compared to those receiving sugar pill.

:: What is the difference between Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin,
      Bupropion and Zyban?

The active ingredient in Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin, Bupropion and Zyban are all the same, bupropion. The only difference is the rate at which the medication is absorbed by your body:

Wellbutrin and Bupropion are considered immediate release and are taken three times daily.

Wellbutrin SR (sustained release) releases the medication into your system at a slower rate therefore only has to be taken two times daily.

Zyban is available as a 150mg sustained release tablet, which is taken twice daily to help smokers quit smoking. See our Zyban FAQ to find out more.

:: What is the difference between Wellbutrin (Bupropion) and other
      antidepressants?

Studies comparing the effectiveness of various antidepressants such as Wellbutrin (Bupropion) have shown that, when properly dosed, they are equally effective in treating depression and other disorders. Therefore medications like Wellbutrin (Bupropion) should be chosen based on different side effects profiles and different drug or disease interactions.

See What are the advantages and disadvantages of commonly prescribed antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications? for a table comparing the different drugs and their classes, in our Depression and Anxiety FAQ .

Wellbutrin (Bupropion) is approved to treat depression. Learn which conditions other antidepressants are approved to treat.
