:: How does Phentermine work?
The mechanism of action of the sympathomimetic appetite suppressants such as Phentermine in the treatment of obesity is not fully known. They are thought to stimulate the release of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and/or dopamine from the hypothalamus thereby producing a decrease in appetite.
They may also work in other ways such as decreased gastric acid secretion (decreasing digestion) or increased energy expenditure.
Most of these medications lose their effectiveness over time, so you must also follow a good diet and exercise program and learn behavior modification techniques while taking them.

Do not take Phentermine if you are currently taking or have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) within 14 days to treat depression.
Safety of Phentermine in pregnancy has not been established. If you are pregnant or nursing, talk to your doctor about the potential risks involved with taking Phentermine.

Before taking Phentermine or any prescription medicine, you should inform your healthcare provider, during either a physical or online consultation, of your complete medical history, including medical problems, allergies and any other medications (especially monoamine oxidase inhibitors/MAOI) that you are taking (both prescription and non-prescription), even if you stopped taking them within the past 2 weeks.

:: What is the difference between the yellow and the clear/blue
generic Phentermine 30mg capsules?
The yellow phentermine 30mg capsules and the clear/blue Phentermine 30mg capsules both contain the same active ingredient (i.e. Phentermine Hydrochloride).
Both of these capsules are manufactured by Eon Labs. The clear/blue version is a generic for Fastin (Fastin is no longer manufactured) and the yellow version is simply generic phentermine.
The only differences are look and sometimes price. The clear/blue capsules contain small white and blue pellets while the yellow capsules contain powder. Their prices may differ.

:: How do I take Phentermine?
Phentermine comes as tablets and capsules.
Phentermine should be taken on an empty stomach. Take each dose with a full glass of water. As Phentermine may cause sleeplessness avoid taking a dose late in the day.
Tablets and capsules must be swallowed whole. Tablets may not be chewed or crushed, but may be broken in half. Capsules may not be chewed or altered in any way.
The following are common doses of Phentermine. The recommended dose of Phentermine may be different for different patients. If your recommended dose is different from the ones listed below, do NOT change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
Adults under Age 60
Oral dosage form (Capsule or Tablet) 15 to 37.5mg once daily before breakfast or 1 to 2 hours after breakfast. Alternatively, your doctor may tell you to take 15 to 37.5mg half an hour to one hour before each meal.
Adults Age 60 and Over
Consult your physician. A reduced Phentermine dose may be necessary.
Infants and Children
Phentermine is NOT recommended for children under age 16.
Take Phentermine exactly as directed. Do not take more than prescribed. Do not take it more often or for a longer period than you doctor ordered. If too much Phentermine is taken, it may cause unwanted effects or become habit-forming .
Most people take Phentermine for 3 to 6 weeks, depending on how you respond to the medication. Inform your doctor if you think that Phentermine is not working after you have taken it for a few weeks. Do NOT increase the dose.

Phentermine is approved for the short-term treatment of obesity. Phentermine will lose its effectiveness as an appetite suppressant after a few weeks of treatment which is when your new healthy eating and exercise habits will make you ready to carry on, on your own.
Most people take the Phentermine for 3 to 6 weeks, depending on how you respond to the medication. If you think that Phentermine is not working after you have taken it for a few weeks, inform your doctor.
Once tolerance to the appetite suppressant effects of Phentermine develops, do not increase your prescribed dose to try to increase the effect. It is time for the drug to be stopped. Continuing to take Phentermine may cause unwanted effects or become habit-forming.

Adipex 37.5mg (also called Adipex-P) is a brand name version of Phentermine, and Ionamin is the brand name time-released resin form of Phentermine.
Ionamin’s time-released (or slow-release) form means that the Phentermine is released in your body over an extended period of time. The effect of a single daily dose of Ionamin is comparable to Adipex or generic Phentermine regimens.

:: What is Xenical and can I take Phentermine and Xenical at the
same time?
Xenical (orlistat) is also a weight loss medication but instead of suppressing your appetite, it works by blocking the digestion and absorption of fat to help you control your fat intake.
Xenical is a non-systemic drug, therefore there are no drug interactions between Xenical (orlistat) and centrally acting weight loss medications such as Phentermine. This would seem to make Xenical a good choice to use with existing medications to increase the weight loss effects.
Unfortunately, studies conducted so far do not indicate that Xenical has an increased effect on weight loss when combined with other drugs. The combinations of Xenical with phentermine and Xenical with Meridia have both been tested in pilot clinical trials with minimal results. Larger studies need to be conducted on these combinations before any definitive conclusions can be made.
Phentermine is not indicated for use with other weight loss medications because the safety and efficacy has not been studied. Phentermine with Xenical would be considered an off-label use, meaning that it hasn't been approved by the FDA.
However, the FDA has approved both drugs separately, and once the agency has approved a drug, doctors may prescribe it as desired. Often combination therapies are not studied because since each individual drug has already been approved by the FDA and is on the market, the cost of the study does not directly lead to the launching of a new drug. The lack of studies does not imply the combination is unsafe, but it also does not necessarily support its safety either. The safety of the combination is established over time as patients utilize the medications.
Therfore, your physician may determine that you may safely take Phentermine and Xenical at the same time. Prior to this determination you must inform your doctor or healthcare professional of your complete medical history, including any other medicines you may be taking (both prescription and non-prescription).

Phen-Pro is the combination of Phentermine and a low dosage of Prozac.
Any one of the following antidepressants: Celexa (citalopram), Luvox (fluvoxamine), Zoloft (sertraline), Paxil (paroxetine) may be used instead of Prozac (fluoxetine). The use of the antidepressant in the Phen-Pro cocktail is unrelated to depression. The Phen-Pro cocktail enables Phentermine to work better and for a longer period of time.

:: What is Fen-Phen or Dexfen-Phen?
Fen-Phen is the combination of Fenfluramine (or Pondimin) and Phentermine.
Dexfen-Phen is the combination of Dexfenfluramine (or Redux) and Phentermine, the active ingredient in Phentermine.
Fenfluramine and Dexfenfluramine were also prescription medications used as appetite suppressants for the short-term management of obesity. Combining them with Phentermine products had a greater appetite suppressant effect than either drug alone.
The FDA never approved the Fen-Phen or Dexfen-Phen combinations, but physicians prescribed them because they seemed to have promising results.
In just a short time, Fen-Phen and Dexfen-Phen became national sensations, with millions of prescriptions in 1996. By the summer of 1997, 24 cases of heart-valve deterioration in women who had taken the Fen-Phen combination were reported to the FDA. Additional reports of heart disease from patients who had taken only Fenfluramine or Dexfenfluramine prompted the FDA to request drug manufacturers to voluntarily withdraw Fenfluramine and Dexfenfluramine in September 1997. The FDA did NOT, however, request the withdrawal of Phentermine.

:: Does Phentermine contain the banned substance Ephedra?
No. Phentermine does not contain Ephedra.
Ephedra also called Ma Huang is a different chemical substance. The FDA banned the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids (ephedra) after determining that there was little evidence of ephedra's effectiveness except for short-term weight loss, while confirming that the substance raises blood pressure and otherwise stresses the circulatory system. These reactions have been conclusively linked to significant adverse health outcomes, including heart ailments and strokes.

:: What are the possible side effects of Phentermine?
Phentermine, like all medications, may cause side effects. Although side effects from Phentermine are not common, they can occur.
The more common side effects are dry mouth, unpleasant taste, nausea, sleeplessness, headache, dizziness, stomach upset, constipation, irritability, anxiety, nervousness, restlessness or tremor. Some of these side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, discontinue using Phentermine and call your doctor immediately:
- Chest pain
- Decreased ability to exercise
- Fainting
- Swelling of the feet or lower legs
- Trouble breathing
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effects that seem unusual or that are especially bothersome.

:: What other precautions should I take when using Phentermine?
In addition to the above possible side effects of Phentermine, please be aware of the following as they apply to you.
Adults Age 60 and Over:
There is no specific information evaluating the use of Phentermine in the older adults. The side effects may be more likely and more severe in older patients, especially when taken in combination with drugs that act on the central nervous system.
Breast Feeding:
Use of Phentermine (or other appetite suppressants) while breast-feeding is NOT recommended. It may pass into breast milk, causing unwanted effects in nursing babies. Please consult your doctor for advice.
Diabetes:
Phentermine may affect blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar levels closely and report any concerns to you physician.
Dependency:
Please use Phentermine with caution as it is chemically similar to amphetamines and may lead to psychological or physical dependency. See: What are signs of a physical or mental dependence on Phentermine? .
Driving and Hazardous Work:
Phentermine (or other appetite suppressants) may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, or a decreased alertness. Do NOT drive or engage in hazardous work until you know how the medicine affects you.
Infants and Children:
Phentermine (or other appetite suppressants) are NOT recommended for use by children under age 16.
Kidney Disease:
The side effects may be more likely due to higher blood levels of Phentermine.
Pregnancy:
Safety of Phentermine in pregnancy has not been established. Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or attempting to become pregnant.
Surgery, Dental Procedures, or Emergency Treatment:
Medicines that are used during surgery, dental procedures, or emergency treatments with Phentermine can cause serious side effects. Prior to any surgery or treatment, inform the doctor or dentist that you are using Phentermine.
Do NOT share your Phentermine prescription with others, this can be a very dangerous practice.

:: What are the possible drug interactions of Phentermine?
Inform your doctor, during either a physical or online consultation, about all the medicines you use, prescription and non-prescription. Certain medicines should never be used together. Some medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may change the dose, monitor the effects or take other precautions.
When you are taking Phentermine (or other appetite suppressants), it is especially important that you inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
- Amphetamines.
- Cocaine.
- Medications for cough and colds, decongestants, or medications for hay fever or other allergies (including nose drops or sprays).
- Ritalin (Methylphenidate).
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants like: Celexa (citalopram),
Luvox (fluvoxamine), Zoloft (sertraline), Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine).
- Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) inhibitors: Furoxone (furazolidone), Nardil (phenelzine), Eldepryl (selegiline), Marplan (isocarboxazid), Matulane (procarbazine), Parnate
(tranylcypromine).
- Tricyclic antidepressants: Elavil (amitriptyline), Anafranil (clomipramine), Asendin (amoxapine), Sinequan (doxepin), Aventyl/Pamelor (nortriptyline), Surmontil
(trimipramine), Norpramin (desipramine), Tofranil (imipramine), Vivactil
(protriptyline).
- High blood-pressure medications such as clonidine, guanadrel, guanethidine, or
methyldopa, vasopressors.
- Alcohol: it may increase the unwanted effects of dizziness and lightheadedness.
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Phentermine.

:: What are signs of a physical or mental dependence on
Phentermine?
The primary signs of dependence on Phentermine (or other appetite suppressants) include a strong desire or need to continue taking the medicine, and a need to increase the dose to receive the effects of the medicine.
Other symptoms may include increased/decreased appetite, disregard for consequences of negative behaviors, feelings of isolation, paranoia, feelings of well-being, hallucinations, irritability and mood swings, and sleep disorders.
If you have been taking Phentermine for an extended period of time or in large doses and you think you may be mentally or physically dependent on it, inform your doctor.

:: What should I expect after I end my Phentermine treatment?
Stopping Phentermine may lead to an adjustment period for your body and you may experience withdrawal side effects. The length of time this takes depends on the amount of medicine you were using and how long you used it.
If you have been taking Phentermine in large doses or for a long period of time, you should consult your doctor before stopping therapy. Your doctor may decide it is best to gradually reduce the dose to help minimize withdrawal side effects.
