You should not take BuSpar (Buspirone) if you:
- Are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within   the last 14 days.
- Are allergic to BuSpar or buspirone.
- Have severe liver or kidney disease.
It is important to let your doctor know about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are taking, and if you have or have had other medical conditions especially liver problems, kidney problems, seizure disorder or bipolar disorder (manic or psychotic episodes).
The safety of BuSpar (Buspirone) in pregnancy has not been established. If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor about the potential risks involved with taking BuSpar (Buspirone). It isn’t known whether BuSpar (Buspirone) passes into breast milk. Do not take BuSpar (Buspirone) without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
BuSpar (Buspirone) should be used with caution in geriatric patients and patients with liver and kidney disease. If you have liver or kidney problems, tell your doctor before taking BuSpar (Buspirone). Depending on your age and the severity of your condition, your doctor may need to adjust your dosage.
The safety and effectiveness of BuSpar (Buspirone) for use in the pediatric patients have not been established.

Anxiety and other psychiatric disorders are believed to be caused by an imbalance of the brain’s neurotransmitters, the chemicals that allow nerve cells to communicate. Serotonin and dopamine are two such neurotransmitters.
BuSpar (Buspirone) acts on serotonin and dopamine, affecting their levels in the brain. Although it isn't known exactly how BuSpar (Buspirone) works to help patients with psychiatric disorders, it is believed that its effects are a result of its action on serotonin.

:: How do I take BuSpar (Buspirone)?
BuSpar (Buspirone) comes in 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 15mg and 30mg tablets.
BuSpar (Buspirone) can be taken with or without food, but take it consistently always with or always without food. Take your tablets at the same time everyday so it is easier to remember.
You should take BuSpar as directed by your doctor. Do not take more medication than prescribed.
Anxiety Disorders
- Usual Adult Dose:
Oral dosage form (Tablets) – Initial starting dose is 7.5mg twice daily, which may be increase every 2-3 days by 5mg until sufficient response is seen. The usual daily dosage range is 20-30mg (divided into two or three doses). The maximum daily dose is 60mg.
- Adults over age 60 and Patients with liver or kidney disease:
Consult your physician. A reduced dose of BuSpar (Buspirone) may be necessary.
* It usually takes 1 to 2 weeks for BuSpar (Buspirone) to take effect. Once you feel better, keep taking BuSpar as directed by your doctor. Do not change your dose or stop taking it without consulting your doctor.
Your doctor may have a plan that varies from above, always follow your doctor’s recommendations.

:: What should I do if I miss a dose of BuSpar (Buspirone)?
If you miss a dose of BuSpar, take it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT double the dose to make up for a missed dose. Do not take more tablets than your doctor prescribed.

:: What are the possible side effects of BuSpar (Buspirone)?
The most common side effects of BuSpar (Buspirone) are nausea, dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, nervousness and excitement. These side effects are usually mild and will often go away after a few weeks. If you have nausea, take BuSpar (Buspirone) consistently with food.
Stop taking BuSpar (Buspirone) and contact your doctor immediately if you have signs of an allergic reaction such as a rash or hives.
There is a rare chance that people taking BuSpar (Buspirone) will have a seizure. If you experience a seizure while taking BuSpar (Buspirone), stop taking the tablets and contact your doctor immediately.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effects that seem unusual or that are especially bothersome.

BuSpar generally does not lead to weight changes. In clinical studies, less than 1% of patients taking BuSpar (Buspirone) either lost or gained weight.

BuSpar (Buspirone) has a low risk of sexual side effects. Studies show that the occurrence sexual side effects are seen in less than 0.1 to 1% of patients. SSRIs such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil and others, which are also used for anxiety disorders, have a higher risk of sexual side effects.

:: What other precautions should I take when taking BuSpar       (Buspirone)?
In addition to the above possible side effects of BuSpar (Buspirone), please be aware of the following as they apply to you.
Driving and Hazardous Work: BuSpar (Buspirone) may cause dizziness or affect your coordination. Use caution before driving a car or engaging in hazardous work until you know how the BuSpar (Buspirone) affects you.
Consumption of Alcohol: It is recommended that you avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while taking BuSpar (Buspirone).
Medication Interactions: Before starting BuSpar (Buspirone), tell your doctor about all the medicines you use. Do not start taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications without asking your doctor first. See What are the possible drug interactions of BuSpar? 
Food Interaction: Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice, as it interferes with the proper metabolism of the drug.
Pregnancy and Breast Feeding: The safety of BuSpar (Buspirone) in pregnancy has not been established. :: What are the possible drug interactions of BuSpar (Buspirone)?
Inform your doctor, during either a physical or online consultation, about all the medicines you use, (prescription and nonprescription). Certain medicines should never be used together. Some medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may change the dose, monitor the effects or take other precautions.
When you are taking BuSpar (Buspirone), it is especially important that you inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
- Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) inhibitors: Furoxone (furazolidone), Nardil (phenelzine), Eldepryl (selegiline), Marplan (isocarboxazid), Matulane (procarbazine), Parnate (tranylcypromine) - there should be at least 14 days between stopping a MAO inhibitor and starting BuSpar (Buspirone) and at least 14 days between stopping BuSpar (Buspirone) and starting a MAOI.
- Cardizem (diltiazem), Procardia (verapamil), erythromycin, clarithromycin, Sporanox (itraconazole), Nizoral (ketoconazole), Norvir (ritonavir), Serzone (nefazodone), grapefruit juice: may increase BuSpar (Buspirone)’s potency.
- Rifadin (rifampin), Mycobutin (rifabutin), Decadron (dexamethasone), Dilantin (phenytoin), phenobarbital, Tegretol (carbamazepine) - may decrease BuSpar (Buspirone)’s potency.
- Valium (diazepam) and Haldol (haloperidol)- BuSpar (Buspirone) may increase these medications’ potency.
